Start with the shape of your stock and the type of steel, if you know it. Select your tools to narrow the list. You can leave any filter open if you are unsure. The strict tools option only shows guides whose listed required tools you have selected.
A match is a starting point, not a promise that every piece of steel will fit. Open the guide and check the stock dimensions, tool alternatives and safety notes before heating anything. Do not forge coated or unidentified metal.
A beginner project to try
Our decorative hook guide uses a short piece of known mild-steel square bar, a forge, anvil, hammer and suitable tongs. The guide describes a drilled mounting hole and a hot-punch alternative. Its collapsible materials checklist gives the stock size and finishing supplies. It does not give the finished hook a tested load rating.
This is the first published guide with a completed finder checklist. More guides will appear here as we verify their stock and tools during article updates. If you get no results, remove a filter or browse the blacksmithing guides directly. The finder does not search every article on the site yet.
Check your material before starting
Knowing the steel type matters. A guide written for mild steel may not suit unknown scrap, and knife steel brings different heat-treatment requirements. Measure your stock too. If you are comparing bar sizes or buying material by weight, use our steel bar weight calculator for an estimate.
